Formal issues?

i normally have straight hair. [its got a light wave, but i straighten it]. ive got a major event coming up and my mom says i cannt just straighten it. i do my own hair, and don't go to stylists very often. i wanna do something like one of the following but i do not know how..

Since you like to straighten it, don't just straighten then leave down, you could add some more stuff to it. One idea thats cute is to if you have bangs you an whisp them to the side and pull your hair up. Pull it to a scrunchy bun or ponytail and lets stands flow out. Add some sparkle to your hair like black and white since the dress is black and white. Sorry i dont have any pictures. Love the dress though.
